New Recycling Challenges for the united states
China has stopped accepting the recycle-able materials that the US has been sending for many years, which poses new challenges for the industry. This article discusses many of the facets involved with recycling and how this change in Chinese policy has a very large impact on US recycling. It mentions a lot of the problems with the current single stream recycling methodology our society uses, and discusses the need to innovate new techniques to recycle in a more sustainable way. This is exactly what we are doing with Green For Green’s reuse movement for Cannabis packaging, which creates a positive environmental impact that is far better than traditional recycling.
Ultimately, shipping recycled waste anywhere is going to be a more carbon intensive process than processing it locally. What’s more, traditional recycling is much more energy intensive over the entire lifecycle because plastics have to be ground down, usually shipped to a different facility, melted, and finally formed into new products. Reuse is the most sustainable option and Green For Green’s reuse program can help solve the packaging problem in the Cannabis industry. We can set a positive example in this space that can be a guiding light to other industries and consumers on how we need to change our recycling/reuse habits as a society in order to solve many of the problems mentioned.
